Gun incidents on the rise in Maryville

Maryville Public Safety officers responded to two separate incidents over the weekend involving guns in local bars.

Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood says his department has seen an increase in gun violations in the past few months.

"I think it's gotten harder with some of the change in the firearm laws for the prosecutors to prosecute gun violations.   And it's a little bit scary for us knowing that there's more firearms out there and where firearms are involved.  I know that the one we had a couple of weeks ago, we felt pretty lucky we didn't have somebody hurt or injured."

Wood says while it's legal in Missouri to conceal and carry a firearm, there are restrictions including not being allowed in drinking establishments. He urges anyone seeing a gun in a bar to call Maryville Public Safety so officers can take care of the situation.
